Sitges and the Garraf coast
42 km and about 50 minutes on the C-31, a road of curves cut into the limestone cliffs of the Garraf above the sea. Best for a short first drive, a beach afternoon and dinner in Sitges.
Costa Brava
About 105 km and 1 h 30 to Tossa de Mar, then the 365 bends of the GI-682 to Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Best for a full day, or three to five days with the coves of Begur, Pals, Peratallada and Cadaqués.
Carretera de les Aigües
About 9 km and 25 minutes up to Vallvidrera. The track itself is closed to private cars, so you park at an access point and walk, run or cycle, then drive back via Tibidabo at sunset. Best for a half day in the city.
Montserrat
About 60 km and one hour via the A-2 and C-55, finishing with the hairpins of the BV-1121 up to the monastery. Best for mountain views and an early start before the car park fills.
Andorra
About 200 km and three hours via the C-16 and Cadí Tunnel or the C-14. Best as a two-day trip from May to October; driving to Andorra costs €5 per day extra.
How to choose a car
For two people and winding roads, a Mazda MX-5 or BMW Z4. For four adults on longer day trips from Barcelona by car, the Audi A5 Cabriolet or BMW 4 Series.
