Why a sunset drive works

A drive is the easiest surprise proposal in Barcelona to keep secret: your partner thinks you are just going for a spin, and you control the route and the timing. Sunset moves a lot through the year, from around 17:30 in December to around 21:30 in late June, so check the exact time for your date and aim to arrive 30–40 minutes earlier. With the roof down you both see the sky change colour, and the car itself makes a natural backdrop for photos afterwards. Keep the ring in a zipped pocket, not in the glovebox.

Bunkers del Carmel and Carretera de les Aigües

The Bunkers del Carmel on Turó de la Rovira give a 360° view over the whole city, but car access near the top is restricted. Park lower down in the Carmel neighbourhood and walk up for about ten minutes; at sunset it is popular, so go further along the ridge for a quieter corner. For more privacy, the Carretera de les Aigües on the Collserola hillside is a flat track with wide views over Barcelona and the sea. It is mostly used by walkers and cyclists, so leave the car at an access point such as the Vallvidrera area and stroll to a viewpoint.

Montjuïc: Mirador de l'Alcalde and Miramar

Montjuïc is the easiest of the Barcelona proposal spots to reach by car. The Mirador de l'Alcalde, on the road up towards the castle, looks over the port and the city, with a mosaic-paved terrace and spaces to stop nearby. A little further down, the Miramar viewpoint faces the harbour and the sea, with the cable car passing overhead. Both are open spaces with other visitors at sunset, so they suit couples who are happy with a few onlookers. Afterwards, the drive down past the Palau Nacional is a good way to start the celebration.

Garraf coast road and Sitges

If you want the sea to yourselves, take the C-31 south from Castelldefels towards Sitges. The road curves along the cliffs of the Garraf massif and has several pull-offs where you can stop safely and look straight down at the water; pick one on the sea side and stop only where parking is clearly allowed. Continue to Sitges and finish on the seafront below the church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, which catches the last light of the day. A table in Sitges for dinner turns it into a full evening. The drive from central Barcelona takes about 45 minutes.
